On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Guatemala as you celebrate the 193rd anniversary of your independence. Vice President Biden’s visit to Guatemala in June reaffirmed the longstanding bonds of friendship between the United States and Guatemala. I was honored to visit your country for the OAS General Assembly in Antigua last year. I admired the work of local textile workers, listened to Guatemalan students sing, and lit a prayer candle at the Church of San Francisco. I was struck by your rich culture and the strength of your people. Our nations are committed to mutual respect for democracy, human rights, and diversity. Our governments are working to strengthen democratic institutions, advance judicial reform, and improve security for all of our citizens. I wish you a festive and joyous Independence Day celebration. |
