Press Releases: Joint Statement of the U.S.-Colombia Security Cooperation Coordinating Group 08/19/2014 02:30 PM EDT Joint Statement of the U.S.-Colombia Security Cooperation Coordinating Group Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC August 19, 2014 The Governments of the Republic of Colombia and the United States of America reaffirmed their strategic partnership during a meeting of the Security Cooperation Coordinating Group (SCCG) on August 1. This meeting was co-chaired by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William R. Brownfield and Colombian Vice Minister of Defense Jorge Enrique Bedoya Vizcaya. This was the fourth session of the SCCG, which is a component of the bilateral High-Level Strategic Security Dialogue (HLSSD) that last took place in Washington on February 28, 2014 to develop strategic mechanisms for further security cooperation and coordination. In response to continued concerns about organized crime threats to citizen security in the Western Hemisphere, Presidents Obama and Santos agreed on the margins of the VI Summit of the Americas in Colombia in April 2012 to broaden the decades-long U.S.-Colombian security partnership and to formalize joint security cooperation activities. The United States and Colombia seek to minimize the impact of transnational crime and illegal drugs on partner nations by providing capacity-building training and fostering greater bilateral and multilateral law enforcement and rule of law cooperation in the region. During the August 1 meeting, the SCCG endorsed the U.S.-Colombia Action Plan on Regional Security Cooperation for 2015, which will be presented for approval at the next HLSSD. As part of U.S.-Colombian joint efforts to enhance coordination in 2015, both countries agreed to implement additional joint priority activities in Central America and the Caribbean. The SCCG is composed of U.S. and Colombian officials from several government agencies who seek to develop complementary security assistance programs to support the efforts of partner nations afflicted by the effects of transnational organized crime. The group also engages in a strategic dialogue about the future of U.S.-Colombian security cooperation.
