CONSUMPTION OF GAME MEAT RISKY

THE Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) would like to warn members of the public that the consumption of game meat from unauthorised vendors has become extremely dangerous and an enormous health risk, especially in the wake of the Ebola virus.

Apart from the fact that the curing process of the meat is done by poachers under unhealthy and unsanitary conditions, the threat of contracting Ebola may also very high as some of these animals may be infected or were found dead under unknown circumstances.
ZAWA is appealing to members of the public to stop creating market for criminals who do not care about the lives of the majority.

Poachers do not care about either the conditions under which these animals are cured or whether the animal they are selling to members of the public is healthy or was even alive in the first place.

They will also pick on anything they can lay their hands on and sell to unsuspecting members of the public. Some may have even been fed on Chimpanzees in the name of game meat.

According to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit of the Vice President's office, the Ebola virus is contracted through consumption of dead animals, after which human to human contact then spreads it through broken skin, blood, secretions or other body fluids of infected people.

ZAWA has also intensified investigations in the manhunt for suspects behind the truckload, which was abandoned with 3,900Kilogrammes of game meat in Kamirenda Extension in Luanshya.

One suspect has already been identified and his details will be released as soon as he is linked to the contraband.

Members of the public should continue to alert ZAWA and the Police of any suspicious vending of game meat to save government of revenue lost through such crimes and consequently save the lives of many.
