ALARMING NEWS ON THE SERENGETI HIGHWAY. WE MUST REMAIN VIGILANT

In spite of the East African Court of Justice ruled on 20 June this year that construction of a tarmac road across the Serengeti National Park is unlawful, TANROADS officer, Mgeni Mwanga, has said the government is determined to build the road - the Serengeti Highway - at a TARMAC LEVEL. He said the road is among Tanzania's national roads and in this fiscal year the government has allocated 7 bn schillings for the construction to begin.

TANROADS Regional Manager, Deusdedit Kakoko, also said Tanzania will continue with its plans of constructing the Arusha - Musoma highway.
Also authorities in Arusha region have called on the goevernment to speed up the processes of constructing the highway in occasion of the Regional Board Committee meeting held over the weekend on the region.

Our sources in the country have to say this on this issue:

"The current financial position of the government is an issue and they don't have money because of bribe system in the country. Ahead of them is Constitutional Review Assembly, Voters Registration, referendum after the CA review finalizing the Constitution, Local Government Election and then General Election.
This is a political thing because they have pledged to build the road before and as they are approaching the General Election they must sweet talk the citizen they promised. It's just politicians playing with mind of people. They are playing games and lying, and will then tell people, before next year's election, that they have provided the road in the face of western opposition, when they have not."

The same have been stated several times by Tanzanian authorities in the last three years. We will probably hear much more like this in the next future as general and local elections are next year and it's first time that the opposition party has real chances to get the power.

Anyways we must remain very vigilant, pushing for the Southern alternative route and please, keep up supporting us. We don't give up the fight. If we can't save the Serengeti, what can we save?
