Was RFJ Program Involved in Capture of Ahmed Abu Khattalah in Libya

Taken Question

Question: There was quite a deal made a few months ago about the fact that there have been no rewards posted for the apprehension of any of the attackers. Can I ask you if the Rewards for Justice Program was in any way helpful in the apprehension of this person in Libya? Was there an award for Ahmed Abu Khattallah? What can we say publicly about this?

Answer: Since January 2014, the Rewards for Justice program has advertised on its web site (www.RewardsForJustice.net) a reward offer of up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any individual responsible for the September 11-12, 2012 Benghazi attacks, and that would include information leading to the apprehension of Khatallah, who is also a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order13224.

Furthermore, since January 2013, RFJ’s interagency partners from the defense, intelligence, and law-enforcement sectors have had this reward offer available to them to use as one of several counterterrorism tools in seeking to identify and locate the perpetrators of the Benghazi attacks.

This RFJ reward offer remains active.

Because confidentiality is the cornerstone of the Rewards for Justice program, we cannot comment on any role that the RFJ program may or may not have played in the capture of Khatallah.

And because the investigation into the Benghazi attacks is ongoing, we have no further information to offer on Khatallah’s capture.
