On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Iceland on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Iceland. I am proud that the United States was the first country to recognize Icelandic independence in 1944. As NATO allies, we are working to promote peace, security, and prosperity around the world. Our shared commitment to our common defense remains the cornerstone of our relationship. Together, we confront the effects of climate change and the dynamics of a changing Arctic. And we enjoy strong people-to-people ties. The innovation, creativity, and talents of Icelandic musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and students, continue to enrich both our cultures. As you celebrate this special day, I extend to all Icelanders my best wishes for the coming year. |
