We congratulate the Libyan people on yesterday’s elections for a new Council of Representatives. These elections provided an opportunity for the Libyan people to advance their democratic transition and continue to hold leaders accountable to fulfilling the goals of the revolution: a free, prosperous, democratic, and secure state that allows for all of its citizens voices to be heard. But as we welcome yesterday’s elections, we are deeply concerned about reports of violence and intimidation during the elections yesterday. We also condemn in the strongest terms the senseless and brutal murder of Libyan human rights activist Salwa Bugaighis, as we condemn all terror, violence, and intimidation in Libya. Violence will not solve Libya’s political problems, and the United States calls all on parties to reject violence and commit to resolving contentious issues through dialogue and negotiation. Looking forward, Libya’s new government must build consensus in support of efforts to establish security and good governance for the Libyan people. We affirm our support for Libya’s transition, especially the vital work of the Constitution Drafting Assembly. We will continue to stand with the Libyan people as they work to build the new country they sacrificed so much for during the revolution. |
