MESSAGE FROM GOVERNMENT OF MALAWI TO CIVIL SERVANTS

It is interesting how civil servants always cry for higher salaries for the sore reason that their colleagues in the private sector are getting more money. They even go on to argue that the money they receive is not enough for transport, housing and food for them and their families.

We have a suggestions for all civil servant who want high salaries. Quit the Civil service and join the private sector!!!!Civil service is a noble job which should be done with pride and satisfaction. Never join the civil service to get rich because if you do, you will end up cashgating government money.Yes, the money you receive as a civil servant is not enough to cover most of the basic things, but maybe instead of trying to change the salary, civil servants should think of changing their life style.

The way things are, we dont think government has enough resources to increase salaries significantly. If the 2013/2014 budget documents are anything to go by, then government has spent about MK130 billion on
salaries alone. this means a 20% salary increase requires additional MK26 billion.
Meanwhile, donors are not giving any indication that they will support the national budget, medicine have to still be bought for our hospitals, schools need basic learning materials, the police and amy and all arms of government need to operate and ..yes, farm subsidy inputs have to be bought. Domestic revenue for 2013/14 is MK350 billion or something close to that. this means almost 50% of that will go to salary increase alone if a salary increase of 20% was to be effected...Fat chance of that happening.
So let civil servant accept reality and live within their means. needs are insatiable. salary adjustment without a concurrent massive job cut in government for now is not possible.so, here is to all civil servants, walk tall, and be happy that you are doing a noble job serving your country. forget the money!
