The Department of State announced on May 25 the nine universities selected to receive the latest round of 100,000 Strong in the Americas innovation grants. Since January, twenty three grants have been awarded to universities across the hemisphere. This round of grants, sponsored by Santander Universities, incentivizes universities to provide support for exchanges across the Americas. Investments such as these, from the private sector and academia are key components of achieving President Obama’s goals for 100,000 Strong in the Americas. 100,000 Strong in the Americas seeks to unify the investments of students, universities, governments, and the private sector toward a common goal. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the hemisphere and the prosperity that it can generate. Announced by President Obama in 2011, the goal of the initiative is to reach 100,000 student exchanges annually in each direction between the United States and the countries of the Americas. To achieve this ambitious objective, the United States is asking governments, the private sector, and the higher education community to invest in the future of the hemisphere. The innovation fund is an important component of laying the foundation for expanding exchanges. The grants for this round were awarded to: California State University-Long Beach, Edgewood College, North Carolina State University, Northeastern University, Montclair State University, the University of Colorado – Boulder, Universidad de la Salle (Colombia), Universidad de San Andres (Argentina), and the University of South Dakota. Each award of approximately $25,000 leverages commitments by the universities to increase student mobility in the Americas and address institutional barriers that prevent students from studying abroad in the region. Each U.S. university has identified at least one partner country in which to work. These grants are one component of a broader effort by the Department of State and the initiative’s two key partner organizations, Partners of the Americas and NAFSA: Association of International Educators, to help educational institutions in the United States and across the Americas to develop and strengthen programs that offer students expanded study abroad opportunities.
