'Repatriations, reconciliation and restlessness '
by Ilmari Käihkö

Summary:

Some of the Ivoirians who fled to Liberia from the 2010-11 post-election
violence organized and returned home in armed groups, as Liberian refugees had
done during their civil wars.

After some attacks across the border and in the capital city Abidjan, this
conflict — dubbed the Third Ivoirian War in Southeastern Liberia — has now
waned. The vast majority of refugees have also returned.

Yet tens of thousands of Ivoirians remain in refugee camps and host communities
in Liberia, waiting for change and return to home. What has happened to these
refugees during the past years?

There is reason to be positive concerning recent processes that have affected
the Ivoirian refugees in Liberia. Nevertheless much remains to be done before
the situation is completely resolved.
