Press Releases: Icelandic Exchange Participants Explore the Policy, Economics, and Science Issues Related to the Non-Lethal Uses of Whales 04/28/2014 03:06 PM EDT Icelandic Exchange Participants Explore the Policy, Economics, and Science Issues Related to the Non-Lethal Uses of Whales Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC April 28, 2014 Nine eco-tourism operators and museum professionals from Iceland will travel to the United States from April 28-May 7 on a State Department exchange exploring the policy, economics, and science for the non-lethal economic use of whales. The White House issued a Memorandum in April to encourage Iceland to develop and expand measures that increase economic opportunities for the non-lethal uses of whales and end its commercial whaling practices. The exchange participants will return to Iceland with new strategies to educate the public, engage with policy makers, responsibly grow their businesses, and access new markets. In the fall, the State Department will also host a virtual exchange with participants from Iceland on conservation efforts. During their 10-day International Visitor Leadership Program, exchange participants will meet with policy experts, conservationists, and eco-tourism companies in Washington D.C., New Hampshire, and eastern Massachusetts. Discussions will take place at the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian Institution, the White House, and other U.S. agencies. Additional activities include visits to whale watching companies and whaling museums, marine research institutes, and meetings with environmental non-governmental organizations.
