Press Releases: Senior Advisor Tomicah Tillemann Travels to Geneva, Switzerland for the Community of Democracies' Governing Council Meeting 03/11/2014 02:47 PM EDT Senior Advisor Tomicah Tillemann Travels to Geneva, Switzerland for the Community of Democracies' Governing Council Meeting Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC March 11, 2014 Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, March 11-12, to represent the United States at the 12th meeting of the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies (CD). The Governing Council is the CD’s highest decision-making body. The meeting will address a broad range of issues related to democracy including the status of freedom of association in the world, challenges facing human rights defenders, and current developments in Ukraine. Governing Council members will recognize Moldova’s graduation from the Community’s Democracy Partnership Task Force, an initiative co-chaired by the United States and Poland to support Moldova’s democratic transition. While in Geneva, Dr. Tillemann will participate in a number of events hosted by the CD’s working groups. These include an introductory meeting of the new Freedom of Expression Working Group and a panel discussion on lessons learned from Ukraine, Tunisia, and Burma organized by the Working Group on Enabling and Protecting Civil Society. Dr. Tillemann will then travel to Budapest, Hungary, March 13-15, where he will deliver a keynote address at the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary’s Eighth Workshop on Governance. He will also deliver an address on global civil society in the 21st century at the Tom Lantos Institute. In addition, Dr. Tillemann will meet with government and civil society leaders.
