African countries have been argued to exploit economic opportunities available in the region, including establishing policies to help the majority to graduate from poverty. IMF Deputy Director for Africa, Dr Roger Nord made the remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday when presenting a paper entitled; 'Africa: Opportunities and Challenges' at the University of Dar es Salaam. He said there that there are many economic opportunities available in Africa, especially sub-Saharan countries, but economic policies are not well implemented, resulting in the majority of people not benefitting from the revenue collected. He cited the natural resources sectors, saying if properly managed they could help reduce poverty among the people. It is said that 30 per cent of world minerals are found in Africa while 38 per cent of uranium, 88 per cent of gold, mineral reserves and 3 billion hectares of land are all found in Africa. The Bank of Tanzania Economic Policy analyst said that if developed countries abandon protectionist policies currently practiced indirectly, economic opportunities for African countries will increase significantly.
