A few months ago, a colleague on another forum asked me to post something useful that can actually help others, something preferably from my field of work. I've been searching my head for something that I can pass along that can be of immediate use to everyone here. I finally found one, believe it or not. It's something about Water.
In one sentence, Do not drink or cook with Hot tap water. Why?
Simple.
The Hot tap water is full of heavy metals such as Iron, Copper, Lead and other metals used in the infrastructure of a home water heater/heating system. You see, as water comes into a house or building, it's quality is very high and it's fit for drinking but as it enters the building and starts running through the internal piping in the building (house), especially the hot water heater, it starts picking up all kinds of heavy metals though a process of leaching. The Hot water coming out of the tap thus has very high levels of these heavy metals.
Why are heavy metals bad for you? Simple. They lead to cancer in the body. In fact it's even more dangerous for babies and young kids. Don't ever be tempted to use Hot tap water to make a kid's milk/formula in order to save the heating time. NO. You'll be feeding your kid heavy metals and condemning that kid to an early cancer.
Plus, the Hot water may also be a breeding ground for certain very robust (not easy to kill) bacteria. I won't get into the scientific details of that.
Also, the Hot water no longer contains any chlorine residual that protects it from any bacterial or viral intrusion. Believe it or not, the Cold tap water is the safer for drinking and cooking purposes compared to the Hot one.
If you live in a highrise building, especially those built before 1990, please do not bother drinking tap water. That water is full of lead. The higher up your floor is, the more lead is in that water. Invest in bottled water for drinking. For cooking, put some water in a container and keep it in the fridge. The heavy metals precipitate at the bottom with cooling. You can then decant the top and use for cooking.
Before 1990, internal piping used a lot of lead but that was banned in 1990. (In Canada)
And please please, when you wake up in the morning or come from work, do not ever drink the first 5 minutes of tap water. That water has been sitting in the internal piping for hours and has collected a lot of heavy metals. You will be loading up on lead, copper and iron. In fact it will have a metallic taste. In the morning, what I do is take shower, wash something before taking water for cooking or drinking. that clears the lines of any leached heavy metals.
I don't want to scare or bore people now. I can provide more explanation on this privately.
Tinda; tinda adong arom g'olwa man i tok ka nera; tinda.
