Malawi's decision to pull out of mediation on Lake Malawi dispute with Tanzania has taken Dodoma by surprise.
Tanzania is complaining that at least Lilongwe should have communicated to them of the decision to dump the talks and take the matter to the International Court of Justice.
President Joyce Banda told reporters on Monday that the mediation was a waste of time especially after realizing that the Executive Secretary for the former SADC Heads of States mediating the was a Tanzania.
"This we knew would compromise everything. This mediation has been a waste of time," said President Banda.
Tanzania's Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Membe told The Citizen Newspaper that they were surprised with Malawi's new stand.
"It is true that they (Malawi) have opted to pull out of mediation…they are yet to be in touch with us. We got the news from Mr. Chisano (Joachim Chisano, Chairman of SADC Forum for Former Heads of State)," Membe told the newspaper.
Tanzania insists that part of Lake Malawi in the northern region belongs to them and have since launched a new map showing part of the lake to be in Tanzania.
Malawi relies on treaties that colonial masters of the two countries Britain and Germany (for Tanzania) signed in 1890 giving the entire lake to Malawi.—Zodiak Online
