U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi on October 7 at the Department of State. The Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister discussed bilateral concerns including trafficking in persons and freedom of expression in Malaysia, as well as issues regarding the South China Sea.

Secretary Kerry thanked Deputy Prime Minister Zahid for Malaysia’s leadership in global efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, especially its recent announcements to join the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL, and to explore the establishment of a regional counter messaging center.

Deputy Prime Minister Zahid visited Washington, D.C, to sign a Homeland Security Presidential Directive Six (HSPD-6) arrangement with the United States. Through HSPD-6, the State Department works with the FBI’s Terrorist Screening Center to negotiate arrangements for the exchange of terrorist screening information with foreign partners like Malaysia to enhance our mutual border screening efforts.
