Press Releases: Ecuador: Restrictions on Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Association 09/10/2015 01:39 PM EDT Ecuador: Restrictions on Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Association Press Statement John Kirby Department Spokesperson Washington, DC September 10, 2015 We are very concerned about the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of association in Ecuador, particularly the Ecuadorian government’s September 8 decision to initiate legal steps intended to dissolve the press freedom of the non-governmental organizational Fundamedios. An active civil society and tolerance of dissenting views are vital components of any democracy. We share international concern over the Ecuadorian government’s efforts to silence critical voices and deny its citizens access to a diversity of information and ideas. Freedom House, Human Rights Watch, the Committee to Protect Journalists, among others, have all spoken out in opposition to the government’s latest action against Fundamedios. We call on the Government of Ecuador to honor its commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the American Convention on Human Rights by upholding freedom of expression and association as fundamental democratic rights.
