On 20 June 2015, Karenzi Karake was arrested at Heathrow airport under a European Arrest Warrant issued by a Spanish judge in connection with war crimes allegedly committed by the Rwandan Patriotic Front in Rwanda between 1990 and 2000. A full hearing in the Magistrates Court on whether he should be extradited to Spain to stand trial is expected in late October. The case has sparked much controversy and debate, including about the UK-Rwanda relationship.

Marine Conservation Zones are being introduced to protect nationally important marine environments. 127 sites were put forward by regional stakeholder groups, and the Government designated 27 sites in 2013. The Government consulted on a second tranche of MCZs early in 2015. It is expected that the Government will announce a third tranche of candidate MCZ sites in 2016.

Reforms introduced in the Water Act 2014 mean that from April 2017 all non-domestic water users in England will be able to choose their water supplier. The reforms will also open up the water and sewerage market to new companies and allow incumbent companies to exit the market. A cross-border English-Scottish market will also be established. Upstream competition will be introduced at a later date.
