Press Releases: The Office of Art in Embassies Announces American Artist Lecture by Glenn Ligon 05/05/2015 02:28 PM EDT The Office of Art in Embassies Announces American Artist Lecture by Glenn Ligon Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC May 5, 2015 On May 11, the Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies (AIE) American Artist Lecture Series will feature noted artist Glenn Ligon in conversation with London-based designer and curator Duro Olowu at the Tate Modern in London. AIE’s lecture series, in collaboration with U.S. Embassy London and the Tate Modern, has featured artists Brice Marden, Maya Lin, Richard Tuttle, Spencer Finch, and Julie Mehretu. Ligon’s work explores race, language, desire, and identity. He received the Studio Museum’s Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize in 2009, the 2006 Skowhegan Medal for Painting, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2003, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 1997. Tate Modern is a catalyst for the transformation of public attitudes toward the visual arts in the U.K. It has had 45 million visitors since it was established in 2000 as part of the Tate Britain. For the past 52 years, AIE has played a leading role in U.S. public diplomacy by promoting cross-cultural dialogue through the visual arts and sponsoring dynamic artist exchanges. One of the United States’ premier public-private partnership arts organizations, it has over 20,000 individual and institutional participants, and a presence in some 200 venues in 190 countries worldwide.
