The United States yesterday made a commitment to provide $40 million to the Chornobyl Shelter Fund at a donors’ conference held in London. This pledge is in line with the United States’ historical burden share of the fund and is in addition to more than $330 million we already have pledged to the project over the years. With these funds, the United States will continue to support Ukraine and the multinational effort to secure and return to an environmentally safe condition the site of the Chornobyl nuclear accident. We also take this opportunity to remember the many victims who lost their lives due to the tragic events that occurred 29 years ago this week. |
