It is with great sadness that the director and staff learned about the death of The Hon. John C Whitehead last weekend. A member of the institute's Presidents' Circle and a long-standing and invaluable supporter of Chatham House, John was the driving force behind Goldman Sachs in the 1970s and early 1980s as co-chairman, before serving as US deputy secretary of state under President Ronald Reagan from 1985 to 1989. Following the September 2001 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, John served as chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which oversaw the area's post-9/11 reconstruction.
With his support, Chatham House established the annual John C Whitehead Lecture series in 1998, which has been delivered by, among others, Secretary James Baker III, Dr Zbigniew Brzezinski, The Rt Hon Robin Cook MP, Dame DeAnne Julius and Sir John Major. Although John will be sorely missed, the institute is delighted that the lecture series will continue to take place in his honour each year, and we will announce this year's speaker in due course.
