On October 12-14, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard will join Secretary of State John Kerry, EU, UN, Arab League, and other foreign leaders in Cairo, Egypt, in support of a major humanitarian assistance and reconstruction effort to benefit Palestinians living in Gaza. This will build on the U.S. government commitment of $118 million in humanitarian assistance to Gaza announced this summer. While in Cairo, Assistant Secretary Richard will hold meetings with Egyptian officials on improving protection and assistance to refugees and migrants in Egypt. In Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, on October 15 and 16, Assistant Secretary Richard will attend the first regional conference dedicated to the protection of refugee children and adolescents – “Investing in The Future: Protecting Refugee Children in the Middle East and North Africa.” The conference is hosted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
