Press Releases: U.S.-Africa Post-2015 Development Agenda Meeting 08/08/2014 03:04 PM EDT U.S.-Africa Post-2015 Development Agenda Meeting Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC August 8, 2014 Heather Higginbottom, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, and John Podesta, Counselor to the President of the United States, hosted a meeting yesterday with African leaders on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the successor framework to the Millennium Development Goals, as part of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. The interactive roundtable discussion was an opportunity to discuss common priorities and deepen cooperation to build support in the next year for a Post-2015 Development Agenda that can deliver concrete development outcomes for societies worldwide. The United States welcomes the Common African Position on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and supports the African Union’s strong leadership in pressing for an ambitious, inspiring, and meaningful Post-2015 Development Agenda. The meeting featured Heads of State and Government, Vice Presidents, and ministers from members of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, as well as other countries, with representation from: the African Union, Algeria, Benin, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, and Uganda. Additional senior U.S. government official representation included: USAID Administrator Raj Shah; U.S. Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council Ambassador Elizabeth Cousens; Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield; Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs H. Dean Pittman; Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director at the National Security Council Gayle Smith; and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Caroline Atkinson, among others. The Post-2015 Development Agenda presents a unique opportunity for the United States and all nations to forge a shared agenda and a new global partnership to promote shared prosperity, enhance sustainability, and eradicate extreme poverty by 2030.
