Question: Why was Mohammad Abu Khdeir arrested? Why is he still detained? Why has he not been indicted yet? Has the United States expressed concern about this case directly to Israel? Answer: Mohammad Abu Khdeir, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in Israel on July 28. According to the Israeli authorities, Mr. Khdeir was arrested for allegedly throwing fireworks at the police. Mr. Khdeir remains in custody awaiting the date of his next hearing. The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem is providing consular assistance; a consular official visited him most recently on August 14. The consulate is also in contact with Mr. Khdeir’s family and his lawyer. We have raised Mr. Khdeir’s case with the Government of Israel. We are concerned that U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem was not notified of his arrest. We are also concerned about the fact that members of the Khdeir family appear to be singled out for arrest by the Israeli authorities. We are calling for a speedy resolution to this case. Our role is to ensure that Mr. Khdeir is being afforded due process under local laws and international standards. We will continue to seek access to Mr. Khdeir as long as he is detained, and we will remain in contact with his family. |
