Press Releases: U.S. Department of State and National Geographic Society Award First Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowships 07/09/2014 10:06 AM EDT U.S. Department of State and National Geographic Society Award First Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowships Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC July 9, 2014 Five awardees have been selected for the first Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the National Geographic Society. As the newest component of the Fulbright Program, this Fellowship provides a unique platform for U.S. Fulbright awardees to raise awareness of transnational challenges and solutions through digital stories created under one or more of the following competition themes: cities, cultures, and energy. The 2014-2015 Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellows are: Ann Chen, who will journey through Western and Pacific Canada on a mapping project incorporating collective storytelling and citizen science. Daniel Koehler, who will film a documentary on the change in traditional culture of the San in Botswana. Erin Moriarty Harrelson, who will explore the emerging culture of deaf Cambodians. Mimi Onuoha, who will explore in the United Kingdom the chasms and overlaps between our online and offline lives. Michael Waldrep, who will film a documentary about the people and places on the outskirts of Mexico City using maps and interactive data. “Through our partnership with the National Geographic Society to create the first Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship, we look forward to following these five Fulbright students as they use innovative platforms to develop globally minded narratives and explore shared values across borders,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan. The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board selected the award winners following a multi-tiered, merit-based review process including recommendations by senior editors from National Geographic Magazine. The Fellows will receive grant period funding for living and travel expenses from the U.S. Department of State, while National Geographic editors will provide mentorship and storytelling guidance.
