Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, from June 21-25 and then to Managua, Nicaragua, from June 26-27, 2014. In Lisbon, Assistant Secretary Richard will represent the United States at the twelfth plenary meeting of the Transatlantic Council on Migration. This meeting of the Transatlantic Council will examine the costs and benefits of new migration patterns. At the Regional Conference on Migration in Managua, Assistant Secretary Richard will join representatives from ten North and Central American nations to discuss migration policy and management, human rights, development issues, and the spike in unaccompanied children migrating from Central America. Assistant Secretary Richard will continue conversations that President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Secretary Kerry have had with their Mexican and Central American partners on the unaccompanied minor situation. The United States is expanding partnerships with Mexico and Central American countries to address the root causes of migration, receive and reintegrate repatriated citizens from Central America, and better inform potential migrants that they are not eligible to remain in the United States under programs like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or immigration reform proposals.
