The Republic of Korea Children's Day

Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
May 2, 2014

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I send heartfelt wishes to the children and families of the Republic of Korea on Children’s Day this May 5.

This Children’s Day, the Republic of Korea is especially on our mind. We grieve with you, and we offer our condolences to all the families who lost loved ones aboard the ferry Sewol. As a father and grandfather myself, I cannot begin to imagine the pain so many in the Republic of Korea are enduring. No parent should ever have to experience the loss of a son or daughter. Our hearts go out to the parents and family members of the young people that were lost. But we also find in this moment of tragedy, the ultimate reminder of what a great gift children are for all of us. In memory of the young people lost, we reaffirm our commitment to work together to promote the welfare of our children, as well as the health, safety, and education of future generations.

On this important day, the United States stands with the Republic of Korea as a partner, an ally, and a friend, as we work to realize our shared vision for a better future for our children.
