Twelve women entrepreneurs, and women leaders of organizations that support entrepreneurs, from Latin America will visit the United States on the Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Americas (WEAmericas) International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) from May 5-23. During their stay, the participants will explore the vital role of women-owned small and medium enterprises as catalysts of economic development. They will also strengthen their skill through site visits, training sessions, and workshops on topics that include leadership development and growing successful businesses. President Obama announced the WeAmericas initiative at the Summit of the Americas in April 2012. The participants are all successful business owners or work with organizations that promote women’s leadership in business. They represent fields that range from food products to tourism to apparel manufacturing. City stops in Washington, D.C.; Manchester and Concord, New Hampshire; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and San Diego, California will allow the participants to meet with business groups and organizations that cultivate innovation. The participants will also explore ways in which the U.S. fosters the advancement of women in business, industry, and the corporate sector. Upon returning home, the participants have access to further training and are encouraged to participate in mentoring programs. Additionally, the participants have been invited to join past alumnae of the program in the WEAmericas Network. The WEAmericas Network is led by a democratically elected executive board and is planning their second annual WEAmericas Convention, to be held in Chile this October.
