On Monday, April 7, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard was in Bangui, Central African Republic (CAR) for meetings with government officials, representatives from the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations, as well as meeting with residents of a camp for internally displaced persons. This trip comes at the end of a visit to Chad where she met with Chadian government officials and representatives of both international and nongovernmental organizations, and traveled to southern Chad to visit refugees from the Central African Republic, as well as Chadians and other migrants who had been living in the Central African Republic but have had to flee the violence there.

The United States continues to support efforts to restore security in CAR and end the dire humanitarian crisis. To date, 625,000 Central Africans have been internally displaced, and over 320,000 have become refugees, including 90,000 who have fled to neighboring countries since December 2013.

The United States is providing over $45 million in Fiscal Year 2014 funding to support humanitarian assistance operations. This support provides food, water, medical care, agricultural support, and protection for people in need inside CAR and for those who have sought refuge in neighboring countries. In addition, the United States supports humanitarian coordination and logistics activities to strengthen relief agencies’ capacities to deliver aid.
