The U.S. – Libya Higher Education Task Force held its first meeting in Washington March 13, chaired by U.S. Ambassador to Libya Deborah K. Jones and Libyan Higher Education Minister Mohamed H. Abubakkar.

The Task Force was established by agreement in September 2013 to deepen bilateral cooperation in education by increasing exchanges, improving the administration of scholarships and exchanges, forming partnerships between American and Libyan universities, and expanding the availability of English language and academic resources for Libyans wishing to study in the United States. The two governments began to work intensively on efforts to spur Libya’s economic growth by increasing the number of Libyan-funded graduate students in the United States in areas of critical need.

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Richard Schmierer welcomed the Libyan delegation and engaged the team on State Department programs that support Libyan education and economic progress, and which seek to strengthen mutual understanding between the United States and Libya.
