Press Releases: Ten Latin American Universities Win 100,000 Strong in the Americas Grants 03/07/2014 01:41 PM EST Ten Latin American Universities Win 100,000 Strong in the Americas Grants Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC March 7, 2014 Innovative plans to expand international student mobility by ten universities across Latin America were recognized with capacity-building grants as part of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas initiative. The goal of the initiative is to reach 100,000 student exchanges each year between the United States and the countries of the Americas. To achieve this ambitious objective, the United States is asking governments, the private sector, and academia to invest in the future of the hemisphere. This first round of competitively-awarded capacity building grants provides seed funding to strengthen universities’ ability to administer study abroad programs. The grants were awarded to: FAE Centro Universitario (Brazil), Instituto Federal Educação Ciência e Tecnologia Sudeste de Minas Gerais (Brazil), Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), Universidad Autónoma de Queretaro (Mexico), Universidad EAFIT (Colombia), Universidade Federal de Vicosa (Brazil), Universidad de Guanajuato (Mexico), Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo (Mexico), Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador), and Universidad Catolica Santa Maria la Antigua (Panama). Each $25,000 award leverages commitments by the universities to build capacity that increases study abroad to the United States and toward receiving students from the United States. These grants are one component of efforts by the Department of State and the initiative’s two key partner organizations, Partners of the Americas and NAFSA: Association of International Educators, to help educational institutions in the United States and across the Americas develop and strengthen their programs that offer students expanded study abroad opportunities. Training is another key component. The first of two 100,000 Strong in the Americas Capacity Building Workshops will be held in San Diego, May 25–26, 2014, for high education institutions from the Americas. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the hemisphere and the prosperity that it can generate.
