Invitation to the 6th Mwalimu Nyerere Festival, 9th -11th April 2014
Let me start by introducing myself and informing you that I am the new holder of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Chair for Pan African Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam, effective February 2014. I wish to express my sincere thanks for your past participation and support for various activities of the Chair. It is my sincere hope that your valuable collaboration will continue and that we shall work together to fulfill the noble objectives of this Chair.
I have great pleasure to invite you to the 6th Mwalimu Nyerere Intellectual
Festival scheduled for 9th-11th April 2014 at the University of Dar es Salaam main campus.
The theme for this year's festival is "LIBERATING THE MIND FOR AFRICA'S ADVANCEMENT".
Under this theme, an interrogation will be done of the role of the mind-set in spurring or deterring Africa's economic, social and cultural advancement. The guiding thesis is that whereas huge efforts and investments are directed at numerous development strategies and programmes, little attention is paid to understanding the role played by a people's mind-set which is critical in achieving or not achieving development goals.
The 6th Mwalimu Nyerere Intellectual festival will therefore, be dedicated to a critical analysis of how the mind-set is impacting, positively or negatively, on the economic, social and cultural advancement of the African continent. Past and contemporary Pan- African attempts to address this factor of development will also be explored.
The sub themes are:
- Pan-Africanism and the liberation of the African Mind
- The mind-set and cultural liberation
- The mind-set and economic empowerment
- The mind- set and social advancement
Lectures, panel discussions, dialogue sessions, exhibitions and performances will be organized around these subthemes.
Kindly let me know if you will be interested to participate as a panelist or main speaker in any of the sub-themes.
