Tanzania has been ranked 106th out of 178 countries in an index of economic freedom failing to beat global average on economic freedom index. The lasted report published by the Heritage Foundation, the country overall economic freedom score, at 57.8 was lower than both the global average and that of its neigbouring country of Rwanda at 64.7 while South Africa is at 62.5 respectively. The index tracks economic freedom globally and covers 186 countries that account for 99 per cent of the world's population. The latest report shows that Tanzania is ranked 15th out of 46 countries in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, and its overall score is lower that the world average. Corruption remains pervasive in all aspects of political and commercial life, especially in the energy and natural resources sectors ranked at 28.8. The complex land laws have led the country into a high incidence of land disputes. The country overall tax burden equals 15.2 per cent of gross domestic income. Overall government expenditures amount to 27 per cent of Gross Domestic Products (GDP), and public debt equals about 41 per cent of the size of the economy. ( The African Weekly)
