PhD Studentship in Agri-Environmental Science

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Agri-Environmental Science. Candidates should hold, or expect to hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Agriculture or a cognate area. Applications will be considered on a competitive basis with regard to the candidate's qualifications, skills experience and interests. Successful candidates will enrol as of 1st July 2014, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The Research topic is part of a wider project to assess risks to high status water bodies from agricultural pressures in the Republic of Ireland; funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Specifically, the PhD student will examine the nature of hydrological pressures on the delivery of nutrients from land to water in case study catchments. This will compliment other work on the soil chemistry risk of nutrient transfers in the same catchments. Investigations will include elements of hydrological data collection, data mining and interpretation and the successful candidate will be required to spend time in upland catchments, largely in the west of Ireland.

The studentship will comprise fees (UK and EU) and an annual stipend of £13,726.  It will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress and is tenable in the School of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at the Coleraine Campus with Professor Phil Jordan. The successful candidate will be largely based with project team-members at the Agri-Food Biosciences Institute, New Forge Lane, Belfast with Dr Donnacha Doody. Dr Karen Daly at the Teagasc Environment Research Centre in Wexford will provide further supervision.
