[Mabadiliko] How Capitalism Works

Sunday, July 21, 2013

I'm not sure if you guys have heard this short story. It's a story of how capitalist economies work.

 Here goes:

There is this sleepy town in rural France. The economy is lousy, no jobs and the future looks very bleak. Everybody owes somebody money and debt is the major concern in everyone's mind.

Then arrives this Russian tourist in town. He goes to the local Lodging/Hotel to book a room for the night. He pays $100 and is given the key to one of the rooms upstairs. He goes upstairs to inspect the room to make sure it meets with his standards.

The Lodging/Hotel owner immediately rushes out to pay  $100 that he owes the local butcher who usually supplies him with meat for his restaurant. The butcher in turn rushes out to pay $100 he owes the local farmer that supplies him animals for slaughter. The farmer is relieved and remembers that he owes the local prostitute $100 for "services rendered" some days back. He rushes over to pay her. The prostitute/hooker then remembers that she owes the Lodging/Hotel owner $100. She frequently uses his rooms to "entertain" her clients.  She rushes over to the Lodging/Hotel to pay up the $100.

Just as the prostitute/hooker pays the Lodging/Hotel owner, the Russian tourist comes down from inspecting the room he was offered. He's very upset because the room does not meet with his standards and he wants back his $100 that he just deposited for the room. The Lodging owner gives him back the $100 and he happily goes on his way to the next town to find a better room for the night.

The $100 that came into town has created a GNP of $500 and left town again to do the same thing in the neighbouring town.

But the townspeople are now happy, no one has any debt anymore and the townsfolk are now looking forward to a prosperous future.

That's how capitalism works.

Courage,
Oduor Maurice Wod Plista Ny'Alego Gang
