From April 27-29, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Tom Malinowski will lead the U.S. Delegation to the fourth annual Freedom Online Coalition conference hosted in Tallinn by the Government of Estonia, to include Chris Painter, Coordinator for Cyber Issues at the Department of State. The theme of this year’s conference is “Free and secure Internet for all.”

At the conference, Assistant Secretary Malinowski and Coordinator Painter will address the coalition, meet with civil society and discuss the need for an open, interoperable and secure internet.

In addition, Secretary Kerry will deliver remarks at the conference via Google+ Hangouts.

While in Tallinn, Assistant Secretary Malinowski and Coordinator Painter will also meet with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Foreign Minister Urmas Paet.

The State Department strives to advance short, medium, and long term Internet freedom by protecting people and organizations at risk, giving them the capacity to communicate safely going forward, pushing for reform of policies that repress human rights, and improving technologies to safeguard online activists.

Launched in 2011 in The Hague, Netherlands, the Freedom Online Coalition is a group of governments committed to collaborating to advance Internet freedom. As Internet repression rises in many areas around the world, the Coalition provides a forum for like-minded governments to coordinate efforts and work with civil society and the private sector in a multi-stakeholder process to support the ability of individuals to exercise their human rights and fundamental freedoms online.
