Press Releases: U.S. Department of State Launches "Free the Press" Campaign 04/25/2014 11:35 AM EDT U.S. Department of State Launches "Free the Press" Campaign Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC April 25, 2014 The U.S. State Department will launch its third annual “Free the Press” campaign on Friday, April 25 at the United States Mission to the United Nations. The Free the Press campaign is part of the Department’s honoring of World Press Freedom Day on May 3. This year, the Department will profile journalists or media outlets that are censored, attacked, threatened, or otherwise oppressed because of their reporting. The Department will direct the world’s attention to their plight and call on their governments to protect and promote the universal human right to free expression. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power and Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski will launch the campaign at an April 25 event at the US Mission to the United Nations in New York by announcing the first two cases of journalists under threat. From April 28 to May 2, the Department Spokesperson will highlight emblematic cases of journalists or press outlets under threat around the world at the daily press briefing.
